A Look at the Lego Company History

In 1932, carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen founded his company in Billund, Denmark with the aim of encouraging creative play and awe-inspiring in children. In the beginning, he produced stepladders however the effects of Great Depression forced him to adapt and evolve his business model. He changed his focus on manufacturing toys, and he created one of the most loved brands in the history of the world.

Christiansen was a forward-thinking person who was quick to adopt new materials and technologies. In 1947, he was the first company to purchase a plastics injection molding machine in the world. This significantly boosted the capabilities and range of Lego products. The machine let him experiment and to create the Lego brick. The bricks had pegs on top and hollow bottoms that were interlocked with each and allowed children to build complex structures that went beyond those possible with the wooden blocks of the past.

The 1950s were a period of growth for the company. Kjeld Kirk Christiansen, Godtfred Christiansen’s daughter, joined the management team and began modernizing manufacturing techniques of the company. The expansion included the launch of a line dollhouses, furnishings and Minifigures, individual figures. In 1979, the company expanded into space by introducing sets of astronaut minifigures and rockets, lunar rovers, and spaceships and also into the medieval world with a castle theme.

In 1990, the company introduced three Model Team sets that were made for advanced builders. The sets comprised small components like levers, axles gears and other components. They were the first Lego sets to offer a level of realism and precision.
